A Complete Guide to E-Verifying Income Tax Return

For taxpayers in India, filing income tax returns for each financial year is mandatory. The complete process of filing an income tax return includes submitting the duly filled ITR form to the Income Tax department and verifying it. Only upon verification does the IT department process your ITR.

You must verify your ITR within 30 days from the date of submission of the ITR. You can either do it offline or online. The official e-filing portal for the ITR is www(dot) income-tax(dot)gov(dot)in.

The income tax department has made provisions to e-verify ITR to avoid the slow and complicated offline verification process. You can e-verify income tax returns from anywhere and anytime through various methods.

How to e-verify ITR without logging into the e-filing portal?

Visit the ITR portal and click the ‘e-verify return’ tab. Enter all details (PAN, Assessment Year, Acknowledgement Number of the ITR, and mobile number) and click ‘Continue.’ Now, enter the 6-digit OTP and submit. In the last step, use the e-verification mode (Aadhar, DSC, or EVC) to e-verify income tax return.

How to e-verify ITR by logging into the e-filing portal?

To avoid entering the above information manually, you can e-verify income tax return by logging into the e-filing portal.

Once you log in, go to the e-verify return page. Here, you can e-verify income tax return through these options:

E-verify using Aadhaar OTP

You can e-verify ITR by generating OTP on a mobile linked to your Aadhaar after validating your Aadhaar details.

E-verify using DSC

You can e-verify income tax return using DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) by verifying your DSC identity and submitting details like the DSC provider, certificate, and provider password.

E-verify using EVC

You can e-verify ITR using EVC (Electronic Verification Code). You can generate EVC in the four ways described below to e-verify income tax returns.

1. By generating EVC through net banking

Log in to your net banking account and go to the e-filing portal. Now go to the uploaded ITR and click the e-verify link there.

 2. By generating EVC through bank ATM

You can swipe your ATM card in your bank’s ATM and generate a PIN for e-filing ITR. You will receive the EVC on your registered mobile number. Go to the e-filing portal and choose the e-verification option - ‘E-Verify Return using Bank ATM.’ Enter the EVC received on your mobile and submit.

3. By generating EVC through bank account

On the e-filing portal, pre-validate your bank account number if you have not validated it before. Now choose ‘E-Verify using Bank Account Details’ and generate OTP. Enter the EVC received on your registered mobile number and submit.

4. By generating EVC through Demat Account Number

On the e-filing portal, pre-validate your demat account number if you have not validated it before. Now choose ‘E-verify using Demat Account Details’ and generate OTP. Enter the EVC received on your registered mobile number and submit.
